Practicing lash artistry over the last several years, I have helped countless clients achieve the right volume, length, and set style. Some people like to do a one week touch up, most people do a two-week fill, some people do a three-week fill, and so on. Ultimately your fill schedule will be determined by your daily care and treatment as well as how perfect you want your lashes to look week to week.

My lash artistry haven is located in the heart of downtown Lake Oswego, Oregon, inside the well known Picasso Salon. My custom lash application takes place in a private room, with low lighting and essential oil defused filtered air. Feel free to bring earbuds and listen to your favorite podcast or audiobook or music of your choice. Often my clients take this opportunity for what I call a lash nap.

Lash application is a very detail intensive skill, as your lash artist, it is important to me that the professional application is done responsibly. Several elements contribute to not only a beautiful lash set but to eye and lash health. To start I ensure that my clients are as comfortable as possible during their appointment by placing gel pads carefully and using tape to assist my work but not at the expense of your comfort. You should never feel pain or irritation or burning during your fill apt. I know what it’s like to endure uncomfortable lash services and it is simply unnecessary. So I try to be as mindful as possible of you while positioning things to get my work done well.

Lashes come in a variety of different curl shapes, lengths, and weight. I ensure that each handmade fan is placed on one isolated lash. Using one of the highest quality, medical-grade adhesives. It is important to understand what lashes are good participants and which ones are not. The extension must be placed on a lash that will tolerate the weight and length of each fan to get our desired outcome.

Lash Extension Preparation And How They Are Applied

⦿ Preparing Your Natural Lashes And Face BEFORE Your Appointment –

To ensure the very best application it is imperative that you arrive at your appointment with thoroughly cleansed lashes. Any remaining makeup or oils from your skin will affect how your extensions adhere to the natural lash which means that your set will not last. So for your sake and mine please make sure you wash your lashes well before coming to your appointment. I would much rather spend time putting lashes on than cleaning build up off your lashes. This ensures your best quality outcome and set longevity.

⦿ Studying The State Of Your Current Lashes, Lifestyle And Lash Weight Tolerance – 

The state of your natural lash plays a significant role in what setting is selected for you. If your eyelashes are naturally short and thin the extensions will be on the shorter side, if you have longer lashes I will determine what are the best type of lashes to use and the healthiest application for them. We will discuss how you go about your day as a lifestyle that can affect your lashes. Things like, if you wear glasses, swim, have allergies, as well as any other routines that might have implications for your lash set. The longer and healthier your natural lashes are the more lash weight and length your natural lash can withstand.

• • If you’ve never had extensions before, consider starting with a half set to see how your natural lashes hold up and how it feels in your day to day life.

⦿ Discussing The Type, Style, And Look Of Your Lash Extensions – 

The two main types of lashes that you see marketed are mink and silk both are synthetic adaptations that are sanitary and sustainably produced. Mink lashes tend to be lighter and have a more mat natural finish where silk tends to have a bit more of a sheen. The lengths can range from 5mm to 20mm. Extensions also come in a variety of thicknesses, curls, and colors. We will discuss together what your primary goal is before making a final choice. I also will need to explain how the various types of lashes will feel daily on your eyes, so your expectations are set correctly. The style and look are one thing but feeling comfortable in your lash extensions is equally important.

• • If you are looking to create a natural look, I would select a shorter to medium length extension with a classic application.
  • Also, if you want a sultry or more dramatic look I would suggest a volume application with medium to longer lengths.

⦿ Applying Your Lash Extensions At My Lake Oswego Salon – 

Eyelash extensions take some time, so plan on scheduling around 3 hours for your first set and anywhere from an hour and fifteen minutes for a two-week classic fill or one hour and thirty minutes for a two-week volume fill. This varies some by the client. I want your experience to be peaceful, comfortable and I always want you to leave feeling beautiful! Every lash that is applied is with that focus in mind. I’m so grateful for my clients, many of which have been with me for several years. They have provided me with great feedback back and kind acknowledgment of the work I do. It is my hope that you feel the very same way after your lash extension experience with me.

Here are the 5 main steps of the lash extension application process:

1. Your lower lashes are isolated under a gel pad to avoid any of your lower lashes being included in the work on your upper lashes.
2. I will gently cleanse both your eyes of any natural oils with lash prep. *Your lashes and face should already be prepared as noted above.
3. Your natural eyelashes will be isolated, with a professional, sterilized, lash extension tweezer. *The eye receiving lashes must be closed for the entire process.
4. A lash or handmade lash fan will then be applied to the underside of the lash base of the isolated lash with medical-grade adhesive.
5. This process will be repeated for the entire lid of both eyes, based on the evaluation of the lash style agreed upon.

Creating a new hairdo is a process that takes time in our discussion together to determine what you are trying to achieve regarding the length – hair cut, hair color, and hairstyle.

Vibrant Hair Colors Are Challenging To Maintain

Sometimes my customers want to try something bold and different. Let’s face it, bright, vivid hair colors can be fun, however, most people don’t realize the amount of maintenance involved in keeping those brilliant tresses on fleek. In truth, those vibrant hair colors don’t last long with consistent washing and upkeep, so after just a short period of time, you are left with hair that is something less than desirable. And a crown of hair color that has become faded, muddied and severely muted.

You can see that in this example from one of my beautiful clients. She knew she no longer wanted to sustain that kind of hair color maintenance schedule and wanted to transition her hair back to a softer, natural blonde mane. I try to compose the best hues and contrasts for every person who sits down in my chair. I work on choosing the best combination of shades, highlights, and lowlights to complement their skin tone and natural hair color while striving to create the perfect blend of sexy and natural beauty.

This particular transition took over a 9-hour process to complete with two different sitting sessions involved. This type of method takes time and patience but well worth the time invested to keep the health of the hair in check. And forgoing the big chop while leaving her current length pretty much intact.

Beautiful Hair Color Is Part Science And Art

The science is based on selecting the best hair coloring products that place the least amount of stress on existing damaged hair shafts. While the art is based on strategically placing highlights and lowlights in such a way that a natural blending occurs. I always try to place highlights so they can be toned to match new growth if at all possible. Another great application is to add a few babylights here and there for a delicate, polished glow in key facial areas.

The final results were simply amazing.

Leap of Faith – The Hairy Truth

Several months ago, a Lake Oswego client/friend (truly most of my clients become friends) – Lina, came to me to have her beautiful long locks trimmed. She has had these extremely long, flowing tresses for many years and they were just such a treasure to trim and style. But she expressed that she was thinking about a change and wanted to trust me to take that plunge with her. I told her how lovely I thought her hair was and while it would be hard for me to cut it, I was ready to help her walk through that process when she was ready!

Lina walked through the door sometime later and confided that she was finally ready to take the leap! She shared with me that she had been hiding behind her hair for years. She felt like it was what made her feminine and pretty. And it was difficult to part with it because of that perception she had of herself. She was always in a tug of war with herself on whether or not to take on that challenge of stepping into a new season. This next step would shape her outward appearance as well. It was truly Lina’s heart that would catapult her into making the jump into taking off more than half of the length of her flowing hair. She had found an organization that would accept her cut donated hair and provide children with wigs who were experiencing hair loss, Children with Hair Loss – childrenwithhairloss.us.

Children with Hair Loss organization is about helping children feel better about themselves on the outside by supplying them with a natural-looking wig so that they can heal their hearts that are hurting on the inside. Their tagline is Covering Young Heads to Heal Young Hearts.

After Lina disclosed her heart about this, I got straight to work on revealing the new Lina that had such a heart transformation that she needed to have it expressed on her own outward appearance. I think Lina said it best herself, “I am so happy to know that there will be someone who will love all this hair as much as I have, if not MORE!”.

Transformation Is A Process

Another client/friend that came in to see me was wanting to have her hair repaired after some previous damage. She was looking to have her color and hair structure restored. She didn’t want to lose the length but wanted to bring back the vibrancy and strength of her locks. As I have shared earlier, transformation is a process and that sometimes includes our outer process as well (often it does). In this case, this transformation was going to be a work in progress, but I knew I could give her a really good start! I used a bond builder which strengthens and smooths the stressed hairshafts. The goal for her was in improving the integrity of the blonde as we worked towards growing it back out to blend better with the length. And of course adding in that pop of purple, so fitting for her sparkling and lively personality.

Transformation is a process, it is hard work sometimes and we need others to come around us to get us over those hurdles that block you from achieving your true self. Types Of Lash Extensions

Let’s run through some of the different lash extension options to give you an idea of the best set for you. Volume sets are in right now. More often than not you will see most salons posting this type of lash sets on their social accounts and websites. They are far more voluptuous and gives lash attitude. The exaggerated fullness is what is trending and many of my clients are requesting this look.

How Volume Lashes Are Created

Volume lash sets are usually created by adding 3 to 4 (or more) lashes to every natural lash. This is precise work, so it can take anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hrs to complete. So, I set my clients expectations by telling them that they need to plan for that kind of time into their schedule if they want to go for that type of lash look. Generally, I will only do a brand new set of volume lashes if the client has had extensions previously done before. The transition from their natural lashes to wearing volume set lash extensions can be more cumbersome than they realize. I usually recommend creating a lighter set at first so their eyes can adjust to this additional weight and lash length. We can always add a bit more during their next visit.

Classic Set Lash Extensions

Next, is the most common lash extension – the classic lash set. This option I apply often. It works for most people and the time in between refills shows the least lash shed. A great choice for the first time lash newbie. You still get that fabulous lash impact but the everyday wear and tear can be much easier to handle. The Classic Lash Set has a lighter lash-per-lash placement ratio, only using a maximum of 2 lashes per lash. Something to keep in mind is that if you already have a lighter lash line naturally, you may want to keep the overall set applied lighter as well. This way you can continue with your day to day activities without your lashes being a hassle and getting in the way.

Now usually I’m all for putting our best foot forward for beauty, but in this situation, I try to educate my clients BEFORE they commit to a lash extension setup. This way they completely understand the commitment involved and are thoroughly educated in all the unexpected variables. Not only with daily living with their new lashes, but the everyday maintenance and the salon schedule for lash refills to keep them at their lash out best.

The way I see it is, it’s my responsibility to consider my clients in every possible way, including their health, daily wear, as well as the final beautiful outcome. The first rule I use when recommending the right lash extensions for my Lake Oswego clients is that not all lashes can handle multiple bonds! From there we can discuss what works for you and what you are wanting to achieve.

Bond builder is a product that helps link broken bonds in the hair during and after the highlighting treatment to make your hair stronger. This allows you to capture those platinum strands as you want but help maintain a silky soft texture without the breakage. Especially after you wash it the first time, you won’t find your hair a frizzy, dry mess. This is quite an advantage for my blonde beauties who want to maintain their lovely light, bright locks.

Storm next opted to have her hair cut in a shorter more manageable style and so we both agreed on a length and went straight to work. Her look gave her a more mature sophisticated style and appearance. We decided on a sleek shoulder-length style. Shoulder-length hair is flattering on all face shapes, from round to long and thin, to square and even heart-shaped. It works with all hair textures as well.  She is in her mid 20’s and was constantly being mistaken for a teenager, which some would sell their prized possessions for such a blessing but she felt it was becoming a bit of an annoyance. So the new hairstyle, cut and color makeover was created to offer her the new look she was desiring. Personally, I feel she is a stunner either way but fulfilling my client’s dream is my complete focus. We really had a great time!
